Originally published in 1970, the book was reprinted in 1981 in soft cover and with a new Preface. It won the Best Terrestrial Wildlife Publications Award by the Wildlife Society in 1972 and the Best Wildlife Book Award by the Symposium on Threatened and Endangered Wildlife in 1974. Although still in print, the book is out of date on several important subjects. It has been superseded by The Way of the Wolf and Wolves: Behavior, Ecology, and Conservation.
